New improvements to Laurel Bank Roadside Bin Station

Rockhampton Regional Council will be rolling out changes to targeted bin stations in the upcoming months, in aim of improving waste disposal and collection throughout the Region.

One site to see a major change and multiple improvement is the Laurel Bank Roadside Bin Station.

A new facility option has been chosen for the site and will see the current waste bins replaced with waste holding bays.

Division 5 Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the option has been chosen in accordance with Council’s Waste Infrastructure Plan with the aim of addressing continual issues faced at the Laurel Bank site.

“For some time, we have been facing issues with this site including the overflow of rubbish, not using the bins provided and the illegal disposal of asbestos and other hazardous items just to mention a few,” Cr Rutherford said.

“Following numerous meetings with the community on the issue, Council has investigated various alternate waste disposal options for the site and will be moving forward shortly on the preferred option.

“We are really happy with this option as it will provide easier access for the local community to use and will provide easier access for Council to collect the waste using its own employees and equipment rather than paying contractors,” she said.

The holding bays will comprise of two concrete pads- 5 metres by 15 metres, with a 1 metre high wall.

“The volume of the pads will equal the volume of waste currently removed from the site weekly – which is around 110 cubic metres,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The pads will have a 1.8m high wall facing towards the entrance of the site, which will be beautified on the outward facing side, and signage detailing the conditions of use for the site on the inward facing side.”

The waste holding bays are expected to be installed within the next few months.
