Rockhampton Regional Council will soon receive $1.5 million of Disaster Funding to help reconstruct a failed floodway in Alton Downs - Nine Mile Road, Rockhampton.
Chair of Council’s Local Disaster Management Group, Cr Tony Williams announced today Council’s success with a funding submission under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).
“We applied for funding under the NDRRA and are very happy to announce that it has been approved,” Cr Williams said.
“This funding is a joint initiative of the Commonwealth and State Governments to provide disaster relief and infrastructure restoration and helps communities recover from the effects of natural disasters,” Cr Williams explained.
“This funding will assist Council’s efforts in fully reconstructing the floodway in this area of Nine Mile Road and we sincerely thank all organisations involved for their support toward this project.”
Cr Williams said the section of road has been underwater during each of the past four flood events between 2010 and 2015.
“Over that time the road has weakened and has caused the pavement to fail,” he said.
“The reconstruction works will see the current concrete floodway removed and replaced with a 6m wide concrete floodway.”
The total cost of the project is $1,884,546, with a $300,000 contribution from Council.
The reconstruction works will commence in 2016.
