Pilbeam Drive repairs to commence February
Published on 27 January 2016
Next month will see a multimillion dollar upgrade commence for Mount Archer’s Pilbeam Drive, following the extensive damage caused to the site by TC Marcia in February, 2015.
Chair of Council’s Infrastructure Committee, Cr Tony Williams announced today that works will be underway as of February 8.
He said that while it’s exciting news, the announcement may also come as bitter sweet given that the road will be required to close for up to six months.
“Due to the heavy machinery and earthworks required as part of this project, the road will need to be closed for some time,” Cr Williams said.
“While we fully appreciate this may be very disappointing to those who regularly enjoy this road and the picturesque views it provides, we simply can’t complete the works without doing so and without risking the safety of the community.”
Cr Williams said the road will only be open to local traffic during this time; however the community will be kept regularly informed as works progress.
“The end result is going to be incredible and it’s going to see the road not only repaired but brought up to an even better condition than February last year,” Cr Williams said.
The upgrade is valued at $4.7 million and is supported by the State and Federal Government under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) - Category B and D.
The upgrade will rectify more than 140 defects that were recorded for the site following TC Marcia in February 2015; including 26 landslips, scoured table drains, blocked culverts, pavement damage and debris build-up.
For those looking to continue recreational walking in the area during this time, Division 10 Councillor Neil Fisher said First Turkey remains open.
“First Turkey’s walking track is still open and this may also be an opportunity to explore some of the other great recreational activities and areas available throughout our Region,” Cr Fisher said.
Works for Pilbeam Drive are expected to be completed by August 2016, depending on weather.
