Parking space numbers to rise with Riverbank redevelopment

When Council recently invited the community to review plans to redevelop Rockhampton’s Riverbank, the result was overwhelmingly supportive.

There were a few concerns that did receive mention though, and the primary comment for many of those was car parking.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow has announced that these concerns have been addressed in the redevelopment’s final designs.

“During our recent community consultation, while most people had only positive comments, lack of parking was still a fairly frequent comment with the proposal,” Mayor Strelow said.

“This feedback came from a variety of community members- including CBD workers, local families and our senior residents.

“We understand how important this is. I’m very pleased to announce that we’ve reconfigured current car park layouts and that the redevelopment’s final designs will incorporate additional parking.”

The final design includes an additional 14 car parks from William to Derby Streets.

Mayor Strelow said reviews of current parking hours are also an option for further improvement.

“This car parking zone is currently set to three hour parking. This could be reviewed to allow for all day parking for the CBD workers,” she said.

Additional parking will also be provided through the realignment and upgrade of the Derby Street riverbank car park. The currently unmarked parking area will be formalised and increase the number of parking spaces from 112 to 126.
