Rockhampton Region gets ready for treasure trail

Published on 23 October 2015

A Rockhampton family is bringing a whole new meaning to the concept of passing down items through generations.

Tomorrow the Freitag family will be hosting what they’ve dubbed as a “Generation Sale” – a garage sale offering items from a number of family members.

The Generation Sale is one of more than 20 garage sales that will be held in the Rockhampton Region tomorrow and one of thousands that will be held throughout the country.

They are each part of the Garage Sale Trail – a national initiative dedicated to the great Aussie tradition of converting one’s trash to another’s treasure.

“My mother-in- law is downsizing, my husband has been going through the shed and together my daughter and I have been seeing what we don’t use anymore,” Birgit Freitag said on her family’s upcoming sale.

“There’s something from each of our family and we’ve also had friends bring around items. We’ve certainly ended up with a lot.”

Their pooled efforts now see everything from household items, sporting goods and even anchors up for grabs from tomorrow morning.

The Garage Sale Trail is held annually and encourages residents Australia wide to hold their own garage sale and become involved in the nationwide movement.

The initiative combines the garage sale tradition with modern technology and allows those hosting garage sales to register online and list key items up for grabs.

Eager bargain hunters can then see which sales are in their area throughout the day and create a personalised ‘treasure trail’.

This year marks the first year the trail has extended to the Rockhampton Region, with Rockhampton Regional Council recently signing up.

Chair of Council’s Business Enterprise Committee, Cr Neil Fisher said it’s a fantastic concept and one that everyone should try and be a part of.

“The Garage Sale Trail is one huge day of garage sales throughout the country and that in itself is something terrific,” Cr Fisher said.

“There are so many benefits to this simple yet inventive concept. It gives residents the chance to get out in their communities, an opportunity for everyone to score a bargain and reduces the number of items that would normally end up in landfill.”
