Personal and warm items for those in need
Published on 20 June 2016
On any given night in Australia 1 in 200 people are homeless, cold and hungry.
You can help now by donating warm clothing, non-perishable food items and personal products for the 2016 Homeless Connect event.
Rockhampton Regional Council is partnering with Government, business and community sector agencies to ensure help is given again this winter for the event, which is now in its seventh year.
Council’s Community Services Committee Chair Councillor Rose Swadling said donating warm items and goods had enormous benefits for those who needed it most in our community.
“The temperature is dropping and winter is here so imagine how difficult it can be for those who don’t have adequate warm clothing or bedding,” Cr Swadling said.
“Your donations of clean jumpers, woollen blankets and warm clothing in good condition can take the pressure off people who are doing it tough.”
Cr Swadling is encouraging the whole community to once again get behind those who need a hand.
“For the past six years people, businesses and schools have donated generously, and we’re asking everyone again to dig deep,” she said.
“It really is amazing how simple items that we often take for granted - roll-on deodorant, non-aerosol insect repellent, sanitary products and non-perishable food items - can make a big difference to someone’s life.”
You can drop off items at Council’s School of the Arts Building in Bolsover Street.
Items needed for the Homeless Connect 2016 event:
- Warm blankets and clothing in good condition
- Toiletries for men, women and children, including nappies and sanitary products
- New children’s books
- Non-perishable food items such as canned food (pull-ring tops)
Homeless Connect provides an opportunity for those who are less fortunate, and for those who do not have safe, secure and affordable housing to attend a day where different services and agencies are on hand to provide basic essentials and help. The Homeless Connect Event 2016 is on Thursday 14 July.
