Pets for presents – Be prepared
Published on 16 December 2016
They might be cute, cuddly and fun on Christmas Day, but don’t forget that pets need care and attention before buying one as a gift.
Council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee Chair Councillor Ellen Smith encouraged people to be prepared and aware of the ongoing responsibilities and costs associated with pets.
“A surprise gift such as a new puppy is wonderful at Christmas but owning a pet is a big responsibility, so a new owner really needs the chance to consider what sort of care they can provide and really find the right pet, or breed, to fit their lifestyle,” Cr Smith said.
“Unfortunately after Christmas many new pet owners find that they can’t cope with the demands of the pet and surrender the animal to the pound or abandon it to become a stray.
“This isn’t fair for the animal, so if you are buying a pet as a gift, make sure you consult with the recipient and research and plan before buying.”
Cr Smith also reminded those who had made the decision to add a furry member to their family to also consider adopting.
“Locally we have several organisations that work really hard to rehome many animals that end up in our pound,” Cr Smith said.
“Capricorn Animal Aid and the local RSPCA branch match animals with their “furever” homes – saving the lives of many animals every week – but there are other rescue groups across the Region which are also breed specific.
“I, myself rescued my dog eight years ago and can personally attest to the fact that adopting a pet is extremely rewarding. So if you’re ready for an addition to your family, contact one of these organisations.”
