Projects roll out as part of Stormwater Drainage Program

With three natural disasters in a five year period, Council is investing to improve the impacts to properties surrounded by poor stormwater drainage.

Rockhampton Regional Council is committing to a ten year program at $3 million a year to address the system failures that have become obvious in the last few heavy downpours.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the increased allocation of money for stormwater drainage should see the majority of key areas fixed over the next decade.

She said a number of projects have commenced since the announcement of the program last June - all of which are set to see major improvements.

“We have a list of projects being carried out this financial year across the Region,” Mayor Strelow said.

“You may have spotted work crews cleaning up creeks and waterways in your local area of late, and this has been achieved as part of this program.

“This project is about 98% complete and has seen the removal of debris and uprooted trees from numerous waterways in the Region that have been causing obstructions to water flow.”

Mayor Strelow said the program is also seeing large scale projects carried out in flood prone areas that pose a safety risk to residents who live in areas that become quickly inundated with water.

“The work currently being carried out around McLeod Park in North Rockhampton is a good example of this,” Mayor Strelow said.

“This project, which totals around $600,000, sees the installation of drainage at the intersection of Dean and Rodboro Streets to reduce the likelihood of the inundation of Dean Street and properties in the vicinity. It’s approximately 80% completed.”

“Another example is the replacement of the existing drainage system that runs through properties in Oakley Street.

“This provides improved stormwater drainage in the road reserve and is half way completed,” she said.

Some of the other stormwater drainage projects listed for the 2015/16 financial year include:

  • Installation of debris deflectors – Beasley Street and Rockonia Road, Rockhampton
  • Installation of drainage infrastructure – areas of Park Avenue, Rockhampton
  • Installation of drainage infrastructure – Venables Street, Rockhampton
  • New stormwater pipes – Harrow Street, Rockhampton
  • Replacement of stormwater inlets – Rockhampton and Gracemere
  • New floodway – Kabra Road, Kabra
  • Renewal of concrete floodway – Alton Downs, Nine Mile and Rosewood Road, Wycarbah
