Quay Street Stage 1A closes for construction of new road surface
Published on 20 June 2016
Major above ground works on Quay Street, between Fitzroy and Denham Street will commence today following the completion of extensive underground work.
This section of Quay Street (Stage 1A) will be closed to traffic for three months to allow crews to prepare the final foundation and lay the sandstone and granite finish.
Chair of the Riverbank Redevelopment Steering Committee, Mayor Margaret Strelow said while much of the works have been underground to date, it won’t be long before the community gets a glimpse of the future Quay Street.
“Up until now our crews have been installing underground electrical, gas, stormwater, communication and irrigation services and we are very pleased with how well the works have progressed,” Mayor Strelow said.
Crews will now prepare the road for the next phase of works which involves a concrete pour and sandstone and granite paving from the building side of Quay Street to the pedestrian footpath on the river side.
“Once the paving is laid in this section towards the end of July, the community will see how incredible Quay Street is going to look,” Mayor Strelow said.
“While we understand the closure in this section may cause some inconveniences, we sincerely thank the community for their ongoing support and patience.”
A designated footpath along Quay street will still be available to businesses and their customers throughout the duration of the road closure. Parking on Fitzroy Street outside the Criterion Hotel is available and Council has also secured parking within the former Westpac car park which is available for two hour periods.
Traffic has now been reversed in Quay Lane, between Fitzroy and Denham Streets and traffic controllers are in place to ensure a smooth transition. The laneway next the NAB building is open for delivery trucks and public traffic to exit from Quay lane and Fitzroy Street as required.
Council has also recently constructed stairs from the lower river side car park leading to Victoria Parade to allow for easier and safer access for the community. These stairs will be open to the public at the end of the month.
