Quay Street construction makes progress

Construction work on the upper bank of the signature Rockhampton Riverbank Precinct Project is expected to be completed in September next year.

Rockhampton Regional Council yesterday today voted to adopt a schedule of works aimed at limiting the impact on local businesses.

Options were considered by Councillors at a Special Council Meeting.

The Revitalisation is a $36m project, involving $15m funding from the Queensland Government and $7m from the Australian Government.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said Council had wanted to explore construction options and decided on a path forward intended to restrict the impact on affected businesses.

The chosen option involves full closure of stage 1B (Denham St to William St), once stage 1A is completed (Fitzroy St to Denham St) and then full closure of 1C/D (Denham to Quay St) after 1B work is finished.

Pedestrian access will be available to all businesses during construction.

Council would also install signage advising customers of how to access businesses in the area.

Earlier in the day, design consultants Urbis showed Councillors how Stage 2 (the lower bank) of the project would look.

“I’m really delighted to see the Stage 2 design today,” Mayor Strelow said.

“We have seen some great work between Council and Urbis to get a development that has real wow features.  We will wait for the appropriate time to roll these out.

“We are starting to see a high quality project take shape.

“I am excited to be Mayor at a time when this project is being delivered.”

Councillors were told the Riverbank Precinct Project was progressing through the construction phase of stage 1A (Upper Bank Streetscape Quay St).  Work is expected to be completed on this stage in early October.

Meanwhile, a tender process is expected to start soon for the removal of the rotunda.
