Reconstruction of Pilbeam Drive begins

Published on 17 February 2016

Reconstruction of Mount Archer’s Pilbeam Drive has officially begun.

Work crews rolled out on site on Monday; commencing the major and multimillion dollar project that will repair and enhance the iconic drive.

The reconstruction will be around six months in the making.

Chair of Council’s Infrastructure Committee Cr Tony Williams reminds the community that as of this week the road will be closed to public access, with the exception of local traffic only.

“Due to the heavy machinery and earthworks required as part of this project, the road needs to be closed throughout the reconstruction,” Cr Williams said.

“While we fully appreciate this may be very disappointing to those who regularly trek or drive this route, we must ensure the community’s safety.”

He said he’s confident however that all will be worth the wait.

“It’s an extensive reconstruction to say the least,” Cr Williams said.

“The end result is going to be incredible and it’s going to see the road not only repaired but brought up to an even better standard than prior to last February.”

The upgrade is valued at $4.7 million and is supported by the State and Federal Government under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) - Category B and D.

Division 10 Cr Neil Fisher said he is thrilled to see the works commence at the local attraction.

“It’s terrific to see the works taking place,” Cr Fisher said.

“It’s the fruition of much planning from all of Council as well as considerable consultation with the local residents at Pilbeam Drive.”

He said a sincere thank you goes to these residents and the community.

“The support of the local residents at Pilbeam Drive has really helped with this project and big thanks go to them as well as the entire community for their understanding and support regarding the site’s limited access,” Cr Fisher said.

Works are expected to be completed by August 2016, depending on weather.
