Regional Pound location ready to go!

The Region’s new pound facility has reached a major milestone today with Councillors approving the development application for a site at the Gracemere Industrial Area.
Mayor Margaret Strelow said the new location was well suited to the region’s needs.
“The development application is for a vacant site of just over two hectares within the Gracemere Industrial Area and zoned for medium impact industry - it’s well suited to a purpose-built contemporary animal management facility,” Mayor Strelow said.
Mayor Strelow said the facility would be built in stages and was expected to take less than six months.
“The first stage will be administration building and one section of the kennels, providing better facilities for the animals and our staff,” Cr Smith said.
“Once completed the entire complex will comprise of an administration area, cat holding area, veterinarian assessment rooms, secure covered loading, kennels and a stock yard as well as 23 on-site car parks.
“It’s been a journey to locate an alternative site for the pound but we’ll be moving as soon possible after the development application process is finalised over the next month.
“The designs are ready to go, the builder is waiting and we expect it will be completed within four months from start of construction.”
The new $1.6 million pound will be a modern, enclosed facility will full veterinary services and is fully funded in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 budgets.
