Residents encouraged to get bushfire ready

Residents of the Rockhampton Region are reminded to prepare their homes and properties for the upcoming bushfire season.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Councillor Tony Williams said preparations for bushfire prone areas are vital, particularly following TC Marcia earlier this year.

“The increase in debris and green waste as a result of the cyclone means more fire fuel and a higher fire risk,” Cr Williams said.

“It’s important to keep fire fuel as low as possible and clear properties and boundaries ahead of bushfire season.

“Now is a good time to do a final check over of properties for stockpiles of flammable material and green waste,” he said.

Green waste disposal is free of charge at all Rockhampton Region landfill sites.

For those looking to conduct hazard mitigation in bushfire prone areas, Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) Central Regional Manager Tony Stroud reminds all to be aware of landowner responsibilities.

“Residents are accountable for appropriately managing all debris and fuel loads on their properties and in their backyards,” he said.

“It is crucial to obtain a Permit to Light a Fire if igniting a fire bigger than two metres in any direction.

“Permits come with clear guidelines on when fires can be lit and what precautions need to be taken, such as informing neighbours ahead of time,” he said.

Steps to prepare your home: 

  • Prepare an evacuation plan and stock your emergency, evacuation and first aid kits;
  • Remove, cut or mow bushes, grass and weeds around sheds, fences and gates;
  • Clear overhanging branches from the roof; clean gutters and buy gutter plugs;
  • Establish a clear buffer zone around your house and other buildings; and
  • Keep hoses at the ready; and if you have a water system, pump or generator, check they are working.
