Riverbank development set to show off massive change in coming month

Over coming months, Rockhampton's riverbank redevelopment will rapidly transition into a world class riverfront precinct as the countdown begins for it's opening in early 2018. 

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said much of the work completed to date has involved extensive excavation works to prepare the new foundation spanning the low bank from Denham to William Streets.

“The redevelopment of the low bank will be the most significant, exciting and fascinating project completed in our CBD in decades, with Quay Street only a teaser for what is yet to come in this once in a generation project,” Mayor Strelow said. 

“To date, much of the construction on the low bank has involved detailed excavation works followed by retaining walls and footings for the new pier restaurant, grand staircase, wet play area and exciting new playground at the southern end.

“From now onwards the community will really start to visualise this space as new elements come together ahead of its opening early in the New Year.” Mayor Strelow said.

Major elements to be installed over coming weeks include the Pier structure roof and equipment for the new playground located at the end of William Street.

The central area of the redevelopment is also progressing well with the installation of hydraulics for the new ‘pop jet plaza’ underway and excavation works to shape the terraced banks now visible.  

MP Michelle Landry joined Mayor Strelow to tour the low bank construction site today.

“I’m delighted to see the ‘jewel of the crown’ of Rockhampton’s CBD coming to life. Stage One has already revealed a glimpse of what we can expect from the redevelopment. Once Stage Two is complete, the Rockhampton Riverbank will be a world class destination in its own right,” Ms Landry said. 

“The heritage buildings of Quay Street are magnified by the development, and I am confident this will be a new era for the Rockhampton CBD. I look forward to seeing more events, more activity and a drawcard for tourists that will be enjoyed for years to come.”

The redevelopment of Denham Street, between East and Quay Streets, is also making significant progress and will re-open in November, complete with new landscaping, lighting and furniture as seen throughout Quay Street.  

The Rockhampton Riverfront Revitalisation is a $36 million project, co-funded by Council, a $7million contribution from the Federal Government and $15million from the State Government.

Key Highlights of the Central Precinct – Stage 2

·         Shaded stepped seating area overlooking zero depth water play area with pop-up jets

·         Water misters are incorporated into the poles of the shade structure to keep you cool

·         New public amenities block located underneath the Pier restaurant

·         Accessible lift to enter/exit the restaurant/lower bank

·         Grand staircase leading riverbank users to the lower bank from Quay Street
