Riverbank goes Gold and Pink in support of cancer awareness

Rockhampton Regional Council will light up the Riverbank pink until the end of the month to support awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month during October.

Last month, the precinct was lit up gold at night following a request from Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk for councils across the state to support childhood cancer and Mayor Margaret Strelow said Rockhampton was proud to promote such worthy causes.

“Lighting up the Riverbank is a fantastic way to raise awareness of these incredibly important issues and get our residents talking about their own health,” Mayor Strelow said.

“We all know someone who has been touched by cancer and any support we can give to those affected or their families is something Council is absolutely proud to be a part of.

“About 650 children were diagnosed with cancer last year and it’s predicted more than 17,700 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year alone, so it’s important that we shine a light on these issues.

“Thousands of residents drive past the Riverbank each and every day so when they wonder why it’s lit up – this is why. Hopefully it’s the start of a conversation and even if it encourages just one person to go and get checked, that’s a fantastic outcome,” Mayor Strelow said.
