Riverfront Precinct progress ensures connected future for Rockhampton

Chair of the Riverbank Redevelopment Steering Committee, Mayor Margaret Strelow is confident that the Riverfront Precinct is well on track to producing a significant regional asset providing opportunities and growth for our community.

“We want to keep the community informed in this exciting project and appreciate everyone’s support. We are providing regular updates throughout the project as part of our commitment to ensuring minimal disruptions to business and community activities,” she said.

“These minor disruptions will be far outweighed by the significant benefits that will flow from the revitalisation of this area, which will provide a great community space of national significance and reinvigorate local pride.

“Major connectivity infrastructure upgrades currently underway will pave the way for progressive business and community opportunities in and around the Riverfront Precinct.

“Whilst a lot of the work to date may not be so obvious, the substantial underground work on Quay and Fitzroy Streets is ensuring the electrical, gas, stormwater, communication and irrigation services are future proofing our community needs. These infrastructure upgrades are now 50% complete.”

As work commences on upgrading the services on the building side of the street, the Quay Street traffic lane will be switched to the river side.

Traffic flow under the Fitzroy Bridge is currently travelling south to north and southbound traffic is detoured from Victoria Parade via Royal and East Streets during this time.

“The Riverfront Precinct is open for business and recreation activities throughout construction, and we encourage everyone to make the most of our tropical climate and get down to see the progress first hand,” Mayor Strelow said.

“This project is one that is not only important for the residents of Rockhampton but also for our long term future by providing opportunities for investment, tourism and growth.”

Recent changes include:

  • 1/3/16 - Traffic moved from heritage building lane to river side of Quay Street (still travelling south to north)
  • One way traffic (south to north) under the Fitzroy Bridge and southbound traffic off Victoria Parade detoured via Royal and East Streets
  • 1/3/16 – Fixed street lighting on the building side of Quay Street disconnected and replaced by solar pedestrian light towers
  • Saigon Saigon has moved to Customs House as a joint restaurant opportunity with The Thai Basement.
