The first stage of works to transform Rockhampton’s Riverbank has officially commenced.

The much anticipated overhaul began on Monday, with reconstruction works currently being carried out in Quay Street.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said it marks the beginning of exciting changes for the Riverbank and the Region.

Mayor Strelow once again took the opportunity to thank the Palaszczuk State Government for the grant of $15 million which is funding the bulk of the works.

“The redevelopment of the Riverbank will be carried out in a number of project stages and it’s tremendously exciting to see the first stage now underway,” Mayor Strelow said.

“Over the upcoming months we will begin to get a glimpse of just how impressive this redevelopment is going to be in full.”

Initial works this week have included cutting of concrete curbing and the removal of the palm trees located on the building side of Quay Street, between Fitzroy and Denham Streets and some of the trees on the River side of Quay Street.

Mayor Strelow said Council will replace the trees  further in the project, with trees on the building side carefully chosen to frame the historic façades of the buildings.

“The redevelopment is about both respecting our amazing heritage precinct and providing a more spacious recreational area for the community,” Mayor Strelow said.
