Rockhampton Botanic Gardens and Zoo redevelopment moves toward designs

Rockhampton Regional Council is ready to turn over a new leaf for the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens and Zoo.

In last week’s Council meeting, Council endorsed a concept plan that is set to breathe new life into the local attractions over the next decade. 

Councillor for Parks, Sport and Public Spaces, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, said it’s an incredibly exciting time for the area, with the document proposing a mammoth transformation.

“For some time, Council has been workshopping ideas for the upgrade of the Botanic Gardens and Zoo, and I am thrilled to share this concept design with the community today,” Cr Rutherford said.

“I know that so many people are going to be excited by what has been mapped out.”

Cr Rutherford said the concept plan includes 14 key projects.

“Many of these projects are large scale and will require external funding wherever possible.

“They have been chosen based on feedback we have received from the community on both locations over the years, as well what would help enhance this area and really see it reach its full potential,” Cr Rutherford said.

“Some of these projects include developing a Visitor Hub which will establish a landmark entrance for the Zoo, new amenities, more parking, and gathering spaces for tours and large groups.

“There’s also a complete revamp for the current Tea Rooms and amenities included, as well as reconstructing the Hugo Lassen fernery back to its original form, but also incorporating an adaptive space which could be used for functions and events. 

“We’re also looking to enhance the footpath network along the Lagoon and increase the area’s recreational use.”

“I’d really like to encourage the community to have a look at our concept design – read up on each of the projects and have a look at the visuals for each – bearing in mind of course, that these are currently conceptual.”

With the concept plan now endorsed, Council will move to detailed design.

Divisional Councillor Drew Wickerson, said the upgrade plans are sure to be welcome news for both locals and visitors alike. 

“The Rockhampton Botanic Gardens and Zoo is an unbelievable asset for our community and this concept plan is about treating it as such and investing in the site for future generations,” Cr Wickerson said.

“The attractions welcome over 300,000 visitors each year and we know this is only going to keep increasing as the redevelopment of the site progresses.

“It’s going to mean aesthetic changes, more facilities and new experiences and I cannot wait.

“This is something incredible for not only this precinct, but our community and our Region as a whole.”
