Rockhampton Regional Council hears about benefits of buskers

Rockhampton Regional Council today delivered a new approach that will be music to the ears of buskers.
Councillors backed a detailed report that recommended Council provide an incentive program to encourage more buskers across the Region.
Cr Ellen Smith said the Rockhampton CBD internal reference group had recognised busking as an important vehicle to draw people into centres for entertainment.
Currently Rockhampton Regional Council charges $149 for the first month and $50 for every month thereafter, for a busking permit.
“The busking application process is onerous and expensive and needs to be simplified to encourage activity in the Rockhampton CBD and other centres,” Cr Smith said.
“Busking is an important medium that can be utilised to showcase the region’s talent and diversity.
“Currently the application process is difficult and expensive for a busker who often receives little money in return.
“Encouraging busking in the Rockhampton CBD and other centres will add vibrancy and promote arts and culture within our community.”
Cr Smith said allowing free permits, incorporating public liability insurance and creating a new busking policy were among a series of recommendations considered.
Mayor Margaret Strelow said this was a great initiative.
“I’m delighted to see this made easier… it will make busking something our young singers and violinists can do during the school holidays without mums and dads having to take out hundreds of dollars in liability insurance,” Mayor Strelow said.
Further information about the footpath dining/busking application process will be published on Council’s website prior to the 1st of January 2017.
