Rockhampton Regional Council this week announced the first BINfluencer Competition winner, with Courtney Abell awarded as March’s BINfluencer.

Waste and Recycling Councillor Shane Latcham said the competition is all about recognising those who are setting the standard when it comes to household waste and recycling bin habits.

“We know there are many passionate recyclers across our region who take pride in sorting correctly, and this competition is our way of rewarding them,” Cr Latcham said.

“Our newest BINfluencer Courtney, is a fantastic example of how simple actions like sorting your recyclables, keeping lids off, and placing accepted recyclable items loose and clean into your yellow lid recycling bin makes a real difference.

“BINfluencers only place recyclable items into their yellow lid bin like glass bottles and jars, paper and cardboard, steel tins, aluminium cans and aerosols, and accepted plastic containers, numbered 1, 2, 4 and/or 5.

“By recycling correctly, we increase resource recovery, help build a local circular economy and reduce valuable resources going to landfill.

"Courtney will receive a fantastic prize package, not only to thank her for sorting her recyclables correctly but also for inspiring others to follow suit."

The region’s first BINfluencer competition winner, Courtney, has scored a Rockhampton Zoo Encounter valued at $110 and a $40 Reviva Ibis Reuse Shop gift voucher.

“I was thrilled to receive a no contamination tick and big smiley face on my bin health check to confirm I am recycling right,” Mrs Abell said.

“Our household has a simple and easy sorting system using buckets for loose, clean recyclables, and I make a conscious effort to rinse and sort items before placing them in the yellow lid bin.

“We maximise our recycling by flattening all carboard boxes to save space in the yellow lid bin, and our household also participates in the 10c Containers for Change program.

“Council’s BINfluencer campaign is a great initiative for families to educate themselves on how they should sort their waste and recycling and I hope the community gets involved.

Cr Latcham said the monthly BINfluencer Competition is open to all Rockhampton Region residential households that receive a kerbside bin collection service, with plenty of chances left to win.

“Entering the competition is easy and we’re on the hunt for more BINfluencers, so keep your household waste and recyclables sorted and you could be next!”
