Rockhampton chosen as FIFO hub for Carmichael Mine

Rockhampton has been identified as a fly in-fly out hub for the $21.7 billion Carmichael Mine, Rail and Port project by Downer Mining, the project’s prime contractor.

Following discussions at yesterday’s Bowen Basin Mining Club meeting with key industry leaders, Mayor Margaret Strelow said she is determined Rockhampton won’t miss out once the Galilee Basin is opened.

“We have been working very hard for the past two years with Adani and GVK Hancock and I am very excited to know that Rockhampton will play a key role in supporting and delivering services as the Galilee Basin opens,” she said.

Mayor Strelow said yesterday’s presentations from the CEO of Adani, Jeyakumar Janakaraj, and the COO of Downer EDI, Kurt Baumgart, were very compelling and an important contribution to the debate about the Galilee Basin.

“They delivered a very convincing argument about the role that Adani’s Carmichael Mine plays in the supply chain for Adani who are a mega international player with a pit-to-plug business model that services the growing middle class in India.”

Councillor Neil Fisher said the granting of the three mining leases (MLs) now means that discussions with stakeholders and contractors can re-commence.

“The rapport we have built up with the resource industry during the last four years has now put Rockhampton at the forefront where we will become an integral part of the development of the Galilee Basin,” he said.

“We are very fortunate to have the skill level within our community to assist in developing new projects in our Region; we’re excited to see that the development of Carmichael Mine will draw on those skills in the coming years.”

Some of the supply chain opportunities for the region will include engineering, construction, maintenance, heavy machinery, equipment, transport, camps, and labour hire.

Mayor Strelow has extended an invitation to the CEO of Adani and the COO of Downer EDI Mining, to visit Rockhampton to meet local business and discuss how Rockhampton can assist in the construction phase that is set to commence in 2017.
