Rockhampton set to showcase an Amazing April for school holidays
Published on 01 April 2025
With the Easter school holidays just around the corner, families won’t need to travel far to enjoy a jam-packed month of fun across the Rockhampton Region.
Deputy Mayor and Communities, Culture and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said Council has a fantastic lineup of activities to keep children and families entertained throughout April.
“The action kicks off with Rare Spares Rockynats 05 from 4–6 April, set to be the biggest Rockynats yet. With an impressive lineup of cars, trucks, bikes, food, music, and entertainment, it’s an event sure to get everyone’s motor running, with kids under 13 free with a paying adult,” Councillor Wickerson said.
“Our four libraries have an incredible program of activities, including LEGO®, anime, virtual reality, origami, and Easter craft, sparking creativity in children of all ages.
“For those looking for a dose of art and culture, the Rockhampton Museum of Art (RMOA) is hosting the vibrant Ken Done: Poems from Home exhibition, along with thought-provoking displays such as Abdullah M.I. Syed: Cabinet of Curiosities and Lincoln Austin: The Weight of Experience.
“RMOA is also offering free drop-in activities for children from 9.30am to 12.30pm daily (except Good Friday) from 7 to 21 April, where kids can create their own masterpieces inspired by artists from the Asia-Pacific region.
“Budding young performers can take centre stage at the Walter Reid Cultural Centre, where the Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre (QAEMT) will run three days of Musical Theatre Workshops for Young People. Places are limited, and bookings are essential.”
Councillor Wickerson said the fun doesn’t stop at creative and performing interests.
“For just $5 per person families can experience a journey back in time at Rockhampton Heritage Village, enjoying vintage car rides, feeding animals, and Rory the Road train rides on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the holidays,” Cr Wickerson said.
“The Rockhampton Zoo is also a school holiday favourite, with free entry, an Easter Hunt competition running throughout the holidays and a variety of animals and reptiles in a beautiful setting.
“For a special experience, families can book a meerkat, snake, or otter encounter, or for aspiring young animal lovers, the Junior Zookeeper Experience on Thursdays offers a hands-on look at zoo life.
Councillor Wickerson said with so much happening at our libraries, art gallery, heritage village, zoo, Pilbeam Theatre, and cultural centres, Rockhampton is the place to be these school holidays.
“Whether it’s exploring new interests, learning new skills, creating masterpieces, or simply spending quality time together, there’s something for everyone to enjoy,” Cr Wickerson said.
“We encourage both locals and visitors to make the most of everything the region has to offer this April, it’s set to be amazing.”
