Rockhampton Regional Council has welcomed today’s funding announcement from the Palaszczuk Government to help promote Queensland’s net-free zones as recreational fishing destinations.

Speaking in Cairns earlier today, Fisheries Minister Mark Furner said Rockhampton Regional Council was one of three councils in Queensland to receive a $100,000 funding boost to promote the fantastic fishing opportunities that have been created by net-free zones.

“Together the Palaszczuk Government and Rockhampton Regional Council are working to transform recreational fishing in the city and that will mean more visitors, more money spent in the local economy and more job opportunities,” Minister Furner said.

“All the indications are that the zones are working as predicted to improve the quantity and size of fish available for recreational fishers. Word is spreading that they are great places for fishing enthusiasts to visit on holiday and the local economies are reaping the benefits.”

Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said the announcement was welcome news, further bolstered by each Council’s commitment to match the Palaszczuk Government’s funding.

“This is fantastic for Rockhampton and for Mackay and Cairns regional councils who have also been offered the funding boost,” Mr O'Rourke said.

“I congratulate Rockhampton Regional Council on securing this funding and for committing the same sum to further establish Rockhampton as an iconic fishing destination. I have no doubt that Rockhampton will soon be recognised as the best place in Australia for anglers to enjoy a break.”

Chair of Council’s Infrastructure Committee Councillor Tony Williams said he was thrilled with today’s announcement and thanked the Palaszczuk Government for their confidence in the local area’s fishing potential.

“It certainly boosts what we as a Council have been working toward in seeing the mighty Fitzroy a fishing hot spot and our Region as a recreational fishing hub and tourism destination,” Cr Williams said.

“Council has significantly invested in a number of infrastructure projects of late and this funding will go a long way in promoting our Region on a national platform.”
