Rocky Zoo receives a half million dollar upgrade

Animals at the Rockhampton Zoo are now basking in newly upgraded enclosures thanks to a $500,000 grant from the State Government’s Works for Queensland program.

The koala and wombat enclosures have received significant upgrades while the dingos are now making themselves at home in their brand new and more spacious home.   

Council’s Chair of Parks and Recreation Councillor Cherie Rutherford said Council was thrilled to have received half a million dollars to improve the conditions for the animals and to enhance the visitor experience.

“We take great pride in our zoo exhibits and work hard to ensure that we maintain and meet the needs of our animals, while also being able to educate and accommodate our visitors who love coming here,” Cr Rutherford said.

“This funding has allowed us to significantly improve the wombat viewing area, build a new shade structure over the koala enclosure and relocate the dingos to a different area of the zoo.  

“The funding also means Council could construct all-accessible pathways, retaining walls, landscaping and a new exit from the zoo. New shade structures for the crocodile enclosure and viewing platform are also on their way in the New Year.”

Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said the four month project employed six people. Each employee was offered an opportunity to retain employment within Council, including two full-time positions.

“Once again we are seeing not only an improvement to this incredible community asset, but also job creation that has led to future employment with Council,” Mr O’Rourke said.

“The work that has been completed from this program is outstanding, and I think from time to time we need to remind ourselves of just how fortunate we are to have a free attraction like this right in the heart of our Region.”
