Following a successful event last year, CQUniversity Australia, Rockhampton Regional Council and Rockhampton Basketball are once again joining forces to bring another National Basketball League (NBL) pre-season game to the region on Saturday, 3 September 2016.

The game will be played between the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans and the Perth Wildcats at the CQUniversity Community Sports Centre, with more than 2,000 tickets available for purchase.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the event is an ideal opportunity to showcase the city while proving to the nation that Rockhampton has the capacity to not only host major national sporting events, but also support them.

“Rocky is a sports loving town, which is why the first NBL game we hosted last year was such a tremendous success.

“When the opportunity arose to once again host an NBL pre-season game, we jumped at the chance to bring this exciting event back to the Region.

“Council is thrilled to again work with CQUniversity to pull this event together and provide the community with a family-friendly, affordable event to enjoy,” said Mayor Strelow

CQUniversity’s Associate Vice-Chancellor, Kim Harrington, agreed with Mayor Strelow by saying that the game would provide families with a great opportunity to witness two national sporting teams go head-to-head, right before the official NBL season gets underway.

“We are a national university based here in Rocky and it is fantastic that our support of a national sporting team allows us to bring an event like this to our home town.

“Co-incidentally, this year the Taipans will play the Perth Wildcats, and CQUniversity is set to open a new campus in the Perth CBD early next year,” said Harrington.

President of Rockhampton Basketball Steve Richards, said the basketball community of players and fans in Central Queensland are fired up for the big game.

“Last year’s event was great and attracted people who don’t usually watch basketball, so I am glad to see the local council and our local university working together again to make this major event a reality.

“Our club members are really excited to be involved in planning and running the event on the night. It’s a huge boost for basketball in the region,” said Mr Richards.
