See the CBD in a new light

Munich, Noosa, Melbourne, Canberra… Rockhampton. What do all these cities have in common? They have all had their centres enhanced with the use of fairy lights!
Over the coming weeks and in time for the inaugural River Festival, Rockhampton’s city centre will be brought to life with the installation of placemaking fairy lights along East Street.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the addition of fairy lights down East St will add a durable and energy efficient sparkle to the city at night.
“The city centre is the heart of a region, so we are working to find new initiatives to ensure it gets pumping again.
“The fairy lights are one little step towards creating an invigorated CBD, providing the ambience needed for a thriving night time café culture and was developed in response to requests from city centre business stakeholders,” she said.
Commercial lighting experts Firefly Lighting Co. from Brisbane have supplied the hardware and local electrical company and council contractor Peter Conaghan Electrical will complete the installation.
“Taking inspiration from Noosa, Southbank Parklands and Broadbeach Mall, all medium to large trees in the central parking island on East Street between William and Fitzroy streets will be illuminated with a firefly-like glow,” Mayor Strelow said.
“We are excited that the project managers will fast track the first stage from William to Denham St in time for the upcoming festival.
“With a number of visitors expected in the Region, this is an opportunity to show our city in the best possible light (pun intended!).
“While it does not fill the empty spaces, it may provide the inspiration and show potential for what the city centre can offer a potential investor,” she said.
The second stage will be completed within 8 weeks following the River Festival, with works occurring 8pm-4am Sunday – Thursday nights until the project is complete.
Mayor Strelow said she hoped that everyone would take the opportunity to visit the city centre over the coming weeks, check out the lights and support local businesses down East St.
