Stage two work underway on 42nd Battalion Memorial Pool

Rockhampton’s 42nd Battalion Memorial Pool has moved into stage two of the $2.4 million upgrade with work now underway.

Parks, Recreation and Sport Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the joint initiative between Council and the Queensland Government would extend the pool’s life for a further 20 to 25 years.

“We’ve removed the unsafe pool slides and water play pools including demolishing cyclone-damaged equipment, so we’re now ready to start work on modernising the plant and filtration systems, and upgrading the 50m pool to include a wet deck,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The wet deck conversion will include a new ramp designed to improve pool accessibility. We’re hoping it will assist older residents, those with disabilities or those who need help into the pool with their independence and general wellbeing when they visit, making it a more enjoyable experience.

“Once all works have been completed, it’s estimated a further 20 to 25 years will be added to the life of the pool complex, ensuring community members continue to have access to affordable leisure, recreation and sporting activities.”

Work is being carried out while the pool is closed for winter and will be completed in October when it opens to the public for the spring/summer season.

“Once completed, the site will be returned back to the community with upgrades to the Mini Golf area, boundary lighting, a shelter shed and new BBQs, which accompany the 50m and wading pools,” Cr Rutherford said.

The Queensland government contributed $666,000 in funding for the life of the project.

Stage one works of $262,232 are now complete with a further $2.245 million set aside across the 2015/2016 & 2016/2017 budgets.
