Rockhampton Regional Council has today announced the completion of its purchase of the Wintergarden site on Alma Street. The site is slated as a proposed Transit Centre, and is also an integral part of the CBD parking strategy.

Mayor Strelow said that the site was a key strategic purchase allowing Council to shape the future of what is arguably the last opportunity for a major new development within the core of the CBD.

The site will be used in the immediate future to provide approximately 110 free long term car parking spaces, which will ease parking problems in the immediate vicinity.  The site will be sealed in the coming months to allow free parking.

Mayor Strelow said that the site was originally put under conditional contract in the third quarter of last year with a final purchase price of $1.25m plus GST. The purchase had already been factored into past budget considerations.

“We are delighted to have been able to finally secure the site.

“During the interim we have included this site in our conversations with potential investors.

“We are looking for partnerships with both Government and private investors and have been pleased with the initial response.

“We remain open to proposals that involve Transit oriented solutions. Meanwhile we will all welcome the extra parking!”

The Wintergarden site is located on Alma Street, between Fitzroy and Denham Streets.
