Sunrise after Marcia inspires local artist

The morning after TC Marcia struck the Region, one local resident found inspiration in the sunrise which brought to light the devastation left behind.
With no power and time on his hands, Darren Webber began painting the sunrise of Saturday 21 February, using a mixture of metallic and base acrylics to represent the calm after the storm.
Mr Webber yesterday donated the vibrant piece to Rockhampton Regional Council to say thank-you for the efforts which have been made to rebuild the Region.
“You still see a lot of devastation, but we have not seen a lot of thanks to the crews, and this is my way of saying ‘thanks,’ Mr Webber said.
“Painting is very therapeutic for me, and the difference in the colours of the clouds the morning after the cyclone was unlike many of the sunrises I have seen – I couldn’t stop looking at it.”
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow says the painting will forever hold its significance within the community.
“It was a pleasure to accept this priceless piece of artwork from Darren, knowing it was being painted in the midst of a difficult time really makes it a memorable keepsake,” Mayor Strelow said.
“I am in awe of people like Darren who find the positives during adversity, and it is simple acts of kindness like this which truly shows our community’s spirit.”
Darren’s artwork can be found on his ‘Art by Dazzla’ Facebook page.
