Photo competition captures impressive community efforts
Published on 19 September 2024
A number of local households and schools are reaping the rewards for their environmental initiatives this week, after they were named winners of Council’s 2024 Sustainability in Action Photo Competition.
The competition, which is held annually, invited the community to submit photos of their everyday sustainability actions.
Environmental Sustainability Councillor Elliot Hilse said he was blown away by the wide range of initiatives that are being undertaken across the region.
“The Sustainability in Action Competition is about celebrating everyday actions that have a big impact,” Cr Hilse said.
“We received a great range of entries in the household categories, and it was inspiring to see residents dedicating their time to composting, recycling, and finding creative new uses for pre-loved items.”
Cr Hilse said entries in the school categories also impressed, with many demonstrating environmental stewardship through their own unique projects.
"One standout entry was Marmor State School who are seeing their fruit and vegetable garden go full circle and putting their produce to plate,” Cr Hilse said.
“Students are able to plant, care for, and create meals with their very own produce which is fantastic.
“Another great example is The Cathedral College’s program to reduce plastic waste in their tuckshop.
“It was also exciting to see that many schools are well on their way to zero waste through Council's Recycling Hero Schools Program and that others are combining recycling and fundraising efforts through the Container Refund Scheme.
“I’d like to thank everyone who entered the competition and I’m looking forward to seeing more of these activities showcased next year.”
