Taskforce ready to embrace FIFO future

Local leaders driving the FIFO taskforce for Rockhampton are continuing proactive discussions to ensure the Region remains a permanent choice as a FIFO hub for Adani.

Leaders in education and Indigenous training, business and government including CQUniversity, Rockhampton Regional Council, Livingstone Shire Council and local MP’s formed the taskforce that’s united on embracing Adani’s decision.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said although Adani has identified Rockhampton as FIFO hub, the Region must continue to lobby the case from a grass roots level to maximise its opportunities.

“We’ve had early success with Rockhampton being identified as a FIFO hub and we need to follow through with a professional presentation that addresses areas we know are important for a successful hub,” Mayor Strelow said.

“We recognise that the Galilee has a journey to go before the opportunities are realised and the importance of presenting our case was impressed upon us by our contacts in the industry.

“We need to be working from the grass roots level to grow with the industry instead of playing catch-up in the future.”

Council has invited senior representatives from Adani to visit Rockhampton while key representatives from Downer EDI have also flagged their interest in visiting the community.

“Showcasing our lifestyle and services to the major players of Carmichael Mine is the first step in ensuring their decision is not only economically beneficial to us, but crucial to their long term investment in the project.

"Our full service university, home-based industry training, schools, hospitals and airport are huge advantages for FIFO workers and their families to call Rockhampton home.”

The taskforce will work to draw up a strategy for engagement with the Galilee Basin mines in the first instance.
