Jobs are Rockhampton Regional Council’s number one priority.

A number of job creating projects are set to come on line in 2018 across a range of sectors including health, defence, manufacturing and agriculture with Mayor Margaret Strelow today touring Teys Australia Rockhampton.

“Advance Rockhampton is working closely with Teys Australia to assist them in creating 40 local jobs,” Mayor Strelow said.

“Teys is an employer of choice in our local community and Council is very supportive of their recent $30 million investment their facility. This is a vote of confidence in our Region and its local workforce.

“We are seeing movement in a number of sectors at the moment - Council recently assisted telco company, South Western Wireless, to relocate its corporate office to Rockhampton amid fierce competition among major cities. In just three months they have grown from one to eight permanent employees with more jobs to come.

“The CQ  Hospital and Health Service will also begin a recruitment drive soon to fill new positions, there are opportunities through the joint Australia-Singapore defence deal and of course we are now seeing the NDIS roll out.

“This all adds up to be a jobs boom for our Region.

“As well as supporting these new jobs, Council is working to make sure that we are building the right environment to support economic growth,” Mayor Strelow said.

Teys General Manager Wasantha Mudannayake said the company is very proud of the legacy it has built in Rockhampton since the abattoir swung into operation 14 years ago.

“We continue to invest in the future to ensure we will be a major part of the Rockhampton community for many years to come. From humble beginnings in 2004 we now support over 4500 Queensland jobs directly and indirectly,” Mr Mudannayake said.

“We are looking to take on another 40 workers right now to support our growth and that’s both from the local community as well as skilled displaced workers from other Regions who will relocate to Rockhampton.

“We will also be recruiting heavily in the later part of 2018 looking for in excess of 200 skilled and unskilled workers to support anticipated growth in 2019.

“Teys is incredibly proud to be such a strong employer in the local community and we in fact started the year with nine school leavers joining our workforce which is fantastic for those young people.

“We are committed to continue to invest in our people and operations to ensure that Rockhampton will maintain its position as Beef Capital of Australia.”
