Trade mission strengthens Rockhampton-Singapore economic ties

The Region’s 26 year strong relationship with Singapore is shifting beyond military ties and into a world of new opportunities.

Recently returning from a trade mission to Asia, Mayor Margaret Strelow said there’s certainly heightened interest from Singapore when it comes to doing business in the Region.

The aim of the mission was to strengthen existing relationships and increase international opportunities for the Region, particularly in the tourism, infrastructure, education and agriculture sectors.

The visit was a continuation of earlier conversations held during Mayor Strelow’s previous trip with Deputy Premier Jackie Trad in 2015.

Mayor Strelow, said the delegation connected with key business leaders in Singapore at the highest levels to promote the Region’s capabilities.

“We began the trip meeting with the High Commissioner, His Excellency Philip Green where we received a briefing on the latest developments in Singapore/Australia relations and held discussions with Australia’s Defence Attache to Singapore and Brunei,” she said.

“We then met with Mayor Teo Ho Pin who offered to initiate discussions around closer relationships between our two local government authorities.

“This is already an established pathway in our people to people relationship with Singapore and the time is now right to grow these opportunities further.”

The delegation also had discussions surrounding our education sector, transport and logistics, exportation of beef and other primary produce to Singapore for distribution throughout Asia.

“We shouldn’t underestimate the importance of our 26 year long relationship with Singapore,” Mayor Strelow said.

“The past 26 years has more benefit than just the military, it presents opportunities for wider investment and people to people exchanges.

“The Singaporean business community are looking at us with new eyes when it comes to new investment.”

Council is now looking forward to a number of potential visits next year from Singapore business leaders who expressed interest in various industries throughout the Region.
