Upcoming charging stations to put Rockhampton on the EV map

The Rockhampton Region is set to become part of the electric car “super highway” thanks to four fast charging EV charging stations currently being installed in Alma Street.
Councillor Drew Wickerson, who holds Council’s Environment Portfolio, said the project is part of an electric vehicle strategy adopted by the Queensland Government, encouraging EV travel from the Gold Coast right up to Cairns.
“Up until now, traversing Queensland and travelling to and past our Region in an electric vehicle has been incredibly difficult due to the small number of charging stations along the A1 highway and the distance you can drive before you need to power up,” Cr Wickerson said.
“The installation of these charging stations is fantastic news for electric vehicle owners who want to visit our Region as well as for locals who own an EV.
“Rockhampton Regional Council is very proud to be part of this initiative. It lays the foundation for a cleaner, greener future and provides an opportunity to capitalise on environmental and social opportunities.”
Cr Wickerson said the stations are expected to be up and running by the end of the month and will come complete with DC and AC charging units.
“The charging stations have been installed to service four parking bays in the Rockhampton Library car park off Alma Street, adjacent to the disabled parking spaces.
“EV drivers will be able to charge their EV batteries up to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes.”
The installation of the Rockhampton EV charging station infrastructure is a three-way partnership between the State Government Economic Development QLD (EDQ), Ergon and Rockhampton Regional Council. Works are being completed by local electrical contractor, Mark Bull Electrical.
EV charging stations have been installed in Cairns and the Gold Coast site is under construction. More sites along the East Coast are planned in the near future to allow for seamless travel of electric vehicles up and down the A1.
