As the Aussie summer approaches and the landscape continues to dry, Rockhampton Regional Council recognises National Water Week, and the vital need for water conservation

Water and Environmental Sustainability Councillor Donna Kirkland said as we experience hotter and drier conditions in our region, it is more critical than ever that we all take responsibility for our water usage and its impact on the environment.

“National Water Week is an annual event, from 16-22 October, dedicated to raising awareness about the value of water, encouraging sustainable practices, and celebrating the role water plays in our lives,” Cr Kirkland said.

“Water is a finite resource, and it's essential that we all recognise our role in preserving our water supply, both for our community's well-being and the health of our environment.

“I strongly encourage residents, businesses, and community organisations to take action during National Water Week and beyond by implementing water-saving practices.

“During National Water Week and beyond, let’s work together to ensure that our beautiful region continues to thrive, even in the face of challenging weather conditions.

“Together, we can make a significant difference in preserving our water resources for future generations.”

Tips for being waterwise

Water use can differ depending on where you live, what you do and how water efficient your water appliances are. A 4 star WELS rating washing machine will save more than 3 buckets of water per load compared to a 3 star washing machine. You can make a difference – be waterwise!

Bathroom

  • Turn off the tap while soaping up your hands or while brushing your teeth
  • Take a shower instead of a bath, but not for too long!

Kitchen

  • Scrape dishes, don’t rinse
  • Run only a full dishwasher

Laundry and toilet

  • Run a washing machine only with a full load
  • Use the ½ flush to save water

Outdoor

  • Use a broom or rake rather than a hose to clean your driveways and hard surfaces.
  • Wash your car or bike on the lawn and water the grass at the same time.

Pools

  • Use a pool cover, or a shade cloth over the pool, to reduce evaporation.
  • Install a rainwater tank or downpipe diverter to top-up your pool instead of using reticulated water.

Gardening and lawn

  • Use mulch to retain water and prevent plants from drying out.
  • Ideally water between 5am and 10am.

Remember, being Waterwise and reducing the amount of water you use will not only help save water but will also save you money.
