Waste Transfer Station officially opens

Rockhampton Regional Waste and Recycling (RRWR) has officially opened the doors of the Lakes Creek Road Waste Transfer Station today.
Chair of Council’s Business Enterprise Committee, Cr Neil Fisher greeted community members this morning, who were some of the very first to try out the new facility.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to see this area a hive of activity this morning,” Cr Fisher said.
“It majorly improves waste disposal for our community. It provides a safer and more controlled waste disposal point. It’s easily accessible and definitely more convenient.
“It’s not surprising to be hearing some really positive comments from the community this morning.”
The Transfer Station was part of a large scale upgrade of the Lakes Creek Road landfill site totalling just over $13 million.
The project included design, planning and consultation, and construction of the facility, Weigh Bridge and roads. An upgrade of the intersection and entranceway to the Lakes Creek Road Landfill was also included.
Now fully completed, the facility comes complete with 16 delivery bays, separate commercial and industrial recycling zones; a waste storage push pit for waste collection and sorting for transport which also includes a grab arm mechanism to assist with the loading of waste; and an automated tip bin to assist the public in placing waste in the pit.
With waste minimisation a key goal of RRWR; the new facility also incorporates an education room into the building.
“There’s so much more involved in these kinds of facilities than simply waste collection or distribution,” Cr Fisher said.
“This room will be used to educate school groups about the facility, and waste collection and minimisation in our area as a whole.”
Cr Fisher said today’s opening follows an impressive community information day held at the site late last year.
“We wanted to provide the community with a sneak peak of the facility and provide full details of how it would operate and just what’s involved in the process of waste collection and disposal.
“The event was very well received and it’s wonderful to see the positivity toward the facility continue today.”
The Waste Transfer Station will accept all residential and commercial waste, and all municipal waste transported by kerbside waste collection vehicles.
The facility will be operating within the same hours as the Lakes Creek Road Landfill site: 7am – 5pm, seven days a week.
