Weed it and reap!

It’s Weedbuster Week and Rockhampton Regional Council officers are setting out to equip residents with the knowledge they need to help protect our environment and beat invasive plants.
Council’s Pest Management Unit will be available to talk to residents about weed control from a stall at Stockland Rockhampton today until Friday, between 9am and 4pm.
Adults can participate in the ‘Pick the Weeds’ quiz at the stall, while children can enter the Colouring-in Competition. A gardening prize pack is up for grabs, drawn at the end of the week.
Chair of Council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee, Councillor Ellen Smith said there are several simple things people can do to prevent invasive plants from spreading throughout the community.
“Disposing of garden waste properly significantly reduces the chance of invasive plants spreading, so the easiest thing people can do to help is to dispose of their garden waste in the correct area at the landfill.
“Also be sure to cover your trailer when taking garden waste to the landfill. This helps stop weeds and seeds from blowing away and invading roadsides and bushland areas,” Cr Smith said.
“Invasive plants spread rapidly and have unwanted impacts on agriculture, livestock and the environment. In fact, garden plant introductions are the primary source of new naturalised plants and weeds in Australia.
“When selecting plants for your garden, choosing safe and native alternatives is a great first step towards management of the issue and keeping our gardens and environment weed-free,” Cr Smith said.
