Rockhampton Regional Council has secured a new route with SkyTrans landing at Rockhampton Airport and announcing flights are soon to begin to the Whitsundays.

Mayor Tony Williams said the new route was a major coup for the Region and would up tourism and business opportunities.

“The Whitsundays is a major tourism destination and this new route is perfect for holidaymakers to make a quick getaway to Rockhampton as part of their tropical getaway,” Mayor Williams said.

“Our Outback to Ocean credentials will see tourism operations and businesses benefit here as these new flights build on the excellent campaigns in regional areas that we’ve seen from Advance Rockhampton in promoting our region far and wide.

“For businesspeople here who need to travel to Cairns, this removes some of the challenge getting there by making it just the one stopover at Whitsundays instead of the normal two on the multi-leg.

“The added benefit of course is mine workers who live in the Whitsundays and travel in and out of Rockhampton for work will now have more options for travel and that reinforces Rockhampton as the hub and gateway to the Galilee Basin,” Mayor Williams said.

Airport Chair Councillor Neil Fisher said Rockhampton Airport was getting on the radar of more and more companies, labelling today’s announcement another feather in the cap.

“This is the start of what I believe will be a very successful partnership with Skytrans and the benefits will be felt far and wide in our community - we can’t wait to for the opportunity to show more visitors everything we have to offer,” Cr Fisher said.

“It’s a credit to how hard Rockhampton Airport and the management there has been working to build relationships, so that we can develop new opportunities and new destinations.

“I’m looking forward to being a passenger on this new route. I know there’s also many people in our region who will be looking forward to these flights for their own holidays so make sure you look at the Whitsundays for your next trip away, especially now that it’s easier than ever,” Cr Fisher said.
