Rockhampton’s 42
nd Battalion Memorial Pool upgrade is nearing completion with work well underway on the wet deck conversion and the installation of new filtration and sanitation plant and equipment.
Parks, Recreation and Sport Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the joint initiative between Council and the Queensland Government would be ready for the December school holidays.
“We’re currently converting the pool to a wet deck and we’ve installed the new concrete channel around the perimeter of the old pool, as well as new balance tanks and new hydraulic pipes,” Cr Rutherford said.
“In the coming weeks we’ll be retiling the pool and the new plant room will be completed, so we’re anticipating this second stage of work to be open for the community before the December school holidays.”
Earlier in the year Council demolished cyclone-damaged equipment, removed the unsafe pool slides and water play pools, and in June started stage two which included modernising the plant and filtration systems, and upgrading the 50m pool to include a wet deck. The wet deck conversion will include a new ramp designed to improve pool accessibility that will assist older residents, those with disabilities or those who need help into the pool.
“Once all works have been completed, it’s estimated a further 20 to 25 years will be added to the life of the pool complex, ensuring community members continue to have access to affordable leisure, recreation and sporting activities.”
The Queensland government contributed $666,000 in funding for the life of the project.
Stage one of the $2.4 million project totalled $262,232 with a further $2.245 million set aside across the 2015/2016 & 2016/2017 budgets.
