Reef Guardian Council's Climate Change Snapshot
The Reef Authority encourages actions, both big and small, to reduce the risks and limit the impacts of climate change on the Reef and coral reefs globally.
The Climate change initiatives snapshot showcases actions the 19 Reef Guardian Councils are undertaking to mitigate climate change and help deliver the Australian government commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 and to net zero emissions by 2050. This includes actions like developing baseline emissions inventories, implementing urban greening strategies, installing renewable energy, capturing and flaring landfill gas, diverting organic waste from landfill and pursuing sustainable procurement policies.
Together, Reef Guardian Councils have demonstrated that they are taking action to contribute to the delivery of these targets and the objectives and longer term outcome and vision of the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan 2021-2025.
