Did you know? A typical household now has around 70 electrical appliances according to Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS).

It wasn’t always the case but electricity is an essential service that most households rely on in some way every single day. Whether it’s boiling the jug for your morning coffee, reading an e-book, or putting a load of washing on, most of our households are plugged in – literally – to the power grid.

As the 'Sunshine State', Queensland is well placed to power forward in the renewable energy transition. According to the Queensland Government, more than 21% of Queensland's electricity needs are now met with cleaner energy, and clear renewable energy targets have been set. The Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan outlines how the Queensland Government will achieve renewable energy targets and ensure a sustainable and affordable energy future for Queenslanders:

  • 50% renewable energy target by 2030
  • 70% renewable energy target by 2032
  • 80% renewable energy target by 2035

So as you can see, there is a lot happening to build a more sustainable and affordable network to feed electricity to your home.

Whether you are on or off the grid, fully renewable sourced or somewhere in between, there is something that every household can do... to be more energy savvy! Not only does this reduce energy consumption but it can save you money on your power bills – definitely a win-win!

Energy ratings are super stars!

By using more efficient models, you can consume less energy and save money in the long run.

  • More stars means more efficient when compared to other models of the same size.
  • Products are given a rating between 1 and 6 stars – the more starts, the more energy efficient the product is.
  • The rating also provides the energy consumption information – the lower the number of kWh per year the better.
Get the seal of approval!

Seal in the cool or warm air so appliances are not working too hard.

  • Check your fridge and freezer door seals are working effectively. If seals are worn, cold air may be leaking out which makes your fridge work harder and costs you money.
  • When using your air conditioner, enclose the area by shutting internal doors and ensure windows are closed.
  • Use window and door draft stoppers to seal off any gaps. In summer, close curtains and shade windows during the day to keep heat out.
Get yourself our of hot water!

Hot water is likely to be one of the biggest sources of energy use in your home.

  • Wash clothes in cold water cycles and run the washing machine with full loads.
