Walk Of Solidarity
0900 commencing at public pathway Kerrigan & Moores Creek Road, Norman Gardens
This is a RRC approved walk along the public pathways concluding in Kanaka Town, RASSIC Grounds where our Market Day will be already in full swing. WOS is to celebrate 160 years of South Sea Islanders arriving in Qld.
In August 1863, the schooner Don Juan arrived in Brisbane with the first South Sea Islanders to arrive in Australia, 67 men from the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), who were brought to work on a cotton plantation on the Logan River.
We chose to celebrate this milestone locally in Rockhampton, as this milestone connects to, not only the families of these 67 Ni-van men (in Australia and Vanuatu) but to all ASSI's as we share this same journey and for many years after, our ancestors were brought to Queensland that very same way.
We are hoping the community will gather family, friends, work colleagues and come unified to commemorate such a significant milestone. We believe that with everyone's attendance, it will signify respect between cultures, family and community.
All details relating to the WOS are on the attached flyer. We would like this to be a huge success, gathering ALL in our community to participate, making it one for the history books. Please bring your flags, banners or wear your colours and support us on the day.
