Australian South Sea Islander United Council - Independent Rockhampton

ASSIUC INDEPENDENT ROCKHAMPTON & DISTRICT INC. was re-established in 1991.

A voice for Australian South Sea Islanders in the early 70's the Rockhampton movement that fought for recognition of its people and with its re-establishment quickly became an integral part of a National Body with many branches along the East Coast of Australia joining in the fight for National recognition of ASSI's.  This fight included attendances at many meetings up and down the Coast of Queensland, attendance at National Conferences, hosting one in Rockhampton during the early 90's, and attendance by a Rockhampton representative together with the then National President at the United Nations Third General Assembly in The Netherlands prior to the historical win for Recognition by our own State Government, as Queensland was the State that most benefited from the 'blackbirding' days in its Sugar Industry and this recognition followed on 7th September 2000.  ASSIUC's aims and goals are to create, educate and promote cultural awareness of Australian South Sea Islanders and the role our community has played in Queensland, Australia.
