Owning a cat

In Queensland, all cats must be:

Microchipped
Contained at all times - cats are not allowed to roam off your property
Provided with appropriate food, shelter and care

Although not compulsory, desexing your cat will help to reduce unwanted litters.

Rockhampton Regional Council does not currently require cats to be registered.

Responsibilities of a cat owner

There are a lot of responsibilities when owning a cat.

Microchipping your cat

In accordance with the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008, cats must be microchipped before: reaching 12 weeks of age; being sold; or being given away.

Fencing and enclosures

As a pet owner you are responsible for providing an adequate enclosure to contain your pet to ensure the safety of other people, animals and wildlife.
