Dogs

In Queensland, all dogs must be:

  • Registered with the local council before they are 12 weeks old and within 14 days of moving to a new local council area
  • Microchipped - ensuring details are kept up to date so your pet can be identified and returned to you if lost
  • Contained on their property or on a lead/under effective control when they are not on their property
  • Cleaned up after both at home and when out walking - "scoop the poop"
  • Provided with appropriate food, shelter and care

Dog registration

In accordance with the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008, dogs must be registered before reaching 12 weeks of age or within 14 days of moving into the Rockhampton Region.

Microchipping your dog

In accordance with the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008, dogs must be microchipped before: reaching 12 weeks of age; being sold; or being given away.

Fencing and enclosures

As a pet owner you are responsible for providing an adequate enclosure to contain your pet to ensure the safety of other people, animals and wildlife.

How many dogs can I own?

Owning multiple dogs comes with responsibilities. If you fail to comply with the laws associated with owning multiple dogs you could face a fine.

Basic dog obedience

A well behaved dog will have a much better quality of life, as its owners will want to spend more time with it and it will be much better behaved out in public.

Dog Breeder Legislation

The Queensland Government has introduced new laws to promote the responsible breeding of dogs. Any person who breeds a dog requires a Supply Number within 28 days of a litter being born.
