Property numbering
The property owner is responsible for the provision and maintenance of individual property numbers as regulated in Council’s Local Law for Roads.
Maintenance shall include removal of grass and vegetation from around the sign to ensure that it is not obscured from the travelling public.
Numbering requirements for urban properties
- All properties allocated a street number by Council
- Must be clearly displayed on property
- Confirmation of numbers available from Customer Service
- Corner properties may have the option of two addresses depending on access restrictions due to the road classification, found in Council’s property notes.
Numbering requirements for rural properties
- Numbering system based on distances along a road from a given start point to the property (calculate metres and divide by 10)
- Adjust slightly to allow odd numbers on the left and even numbers on the right hand side of the road
- Confirmation of numbers available from Customer Service
- Standard number posts to be used with reflective numbers as provided by Council.
Supply of number signs – initial implementation
- Free of charge number signs supplied to every ratepayer who has an existing residence/access driveway
- Vacant lots will not receive a sign until a dwelling or shed is constructed
- When an existing lot is subdivided, the developer must pay for the additional number/s.
Supply of number signs - new residences
- Council will advise the property owner to apply for a Road Reserve Works Permit(PDF, 343KB) upon reception of a Building Permit application
- Council will supply a free of charge number sign to the access driveway when workmen are next in the area.
Location of signs on kerb and channelled roadways
- Painted or fixed to the kerb
- Erected on the road frontage boundary of the property.
Location of signs on non-kerbed roadways
- Erected at the far side of the access drive approximately 1m outside the line of guideposts, shoulder of the road, property side of the piped crossing, or adjacent to the mail box
- In a visible location
- The top of the sign must be 1 - 1.2m above the ground, where possible.
Location of signs on single access to multiple lots
- Placed at the near and far sides of the access reflecting the number of lots served by the combined access roads.
Numbers must be easily read from the roadway to enable a property to be identified by emergency services vehicles, taxis, service authorities and the general public.
